events and conventions, has a roof 208 feet or over eighteen stories
high, and includes a $2,000,00o scoreboard which is a show in
itself.
Certainly Houston has blazed the path of things to come in the
world of sports.
Sue Flanagan, author of Sam Houston's Texas, was the featured
speaker at the spring meeting of the East Texas Historical Asso-
ciation, on March 20, in Tyler. Using selected pictures from her
book, Miss Flanagan spoke authoritatively of Sam Houston's life
and interests in the area of Texas primarily east of the Trinity
River.
Other participants on the program were Ralph Wooster, from
Lamar Tech in Beaumont, who spoke on "Life in Civil War East
Texas"; James Dickson from Stephen F. Austin College, Nacog-
doches, who contributed a paper titled "A. A. Nelson: Sailor,
Surveyor, Citizen: A Personal Profile." Three women from Hen-
derson-Mrs. Carl Jaggers, Mrs. Gordon Brown, and Mrs. Mary
Frank Dunn-presented an illustrated discussion on homes in
Rusk County, and, finally, Seth Walton of Marshall, provided
information concerning the purposes and membership of the East
Texas Historical Association in his "President's Report."
Mrs. E. H. Lasseter, Henderson, was program chairman, and
Bob Glover, Lee Lawrence, and the Smith County Historical
Society made local arrangements for the meeting at Tyler Junior
College.
Linda Moorhead of Stephen F. Austin High School, Austin,
was awarded the top prize in the annual Junior Historian Writing
Contest at a luncheon on Saturday, May i, during the Twenty-
sixth Annual Meeting of the Junior Historians of Texas. The
meeting was held on the campus of the University of Texas. The
$1oo first place award was presented by Cooper K. Ragan of
Houston, a member of the Executive Council of the Texas State
Historical Association. Miss Moorhead's paper was entitled "The
Alabama and Coushatta Indians."
