1875 broke the backbone of Indian resistance, but when seventy-
five of the leading chiefs and leaders were arrested and sent to
St. Augustine, Florida, for confinement, following these aggres-
sive campaigns, the lesson taught the wild tribes of the Indian
Territory was salutary indeed. The Indian depredations in Texas
from that quarter forever ceased.
