over 25 years old, the Cowboy Band Hall and
Woodward-Dellis
Recital Hall.
As student
enrollment has
grown over the
years, so have
instruction,
curricular, library,
and administrative
requirements,
placing ever-increasing demands on the
present facilities.
Through Leadership for Tomorrow cam-
paign efforts, a fourth School of Music
building is currently under construction.
Groundbreaking ceremonies were held during
Homecoming of 1998 for the Lee Hemphill
Music Building, named for its primary
benefactor.
All music students will benefit from the
expanded music library, modern and attrac-
tive administrative offices and practice rooms,
and a new greenroom (taking the place of the
Woodward-Dellis "ready room"), but the
choral students will benefit most. For the first
time in the history of HSU, the
choir will have its own rehearsal
space along with offices, storage for
uniforms, and a choral library.
(Until now the choir has always
rehearsed in the recital hall.)
The choral suite will also
enhance the School's ability to
recruit. Presently, many new
students, and an even larger number of
prospects, come from high schools with more
modern, functional, and attractive choral
facilities. HSU has remained consistentlysuccessful in spite of building limitations. Yet,
the addition of a choral music complex to the
physical plant will further enhance an already
successful program.
The choral suite will also provide more
classroom space, a quasi-recital hall for studio
voice recitals, and a large area for additional
rehearsals for activities such as opera.
Dean Loyd Hawthorne is delighted with the
Hemphill Music Building. "These new and
modern facilities will be commensurate with the
quality of musical education that has been
offered throughout the University's history:' he
stated. "I am privileged to see the dream of
many come to fruition:
As a side note, fundraising for the renovation
of Caldwell Hall and Woodward-Dellis Recital
Hall will continue. Just over $1.5 million is
needed to restore historic Caldwell Hall to its
original grandeur and to provide a state-of-the-
art facility which will complement the new
music complex.

Another new building is also coming to life on
the HSU campus, the Connally Missions Center,
named after the facility's primary benefactor, Dr
Virginia Boyd Connally.
The Missions Center will house the offices of
the Baptist Student Ministry (formerly known
as BSU), an office for the Director of Church
Relations (Bruce Ayres '68), an office for the
Connally Endowed Missions Chair, and facilities
for programs and activities related to missions
and student ministries. Additionally, it will
house a four-station computer room complete
with missions and geography software.RANGE RIDE:R FAI. 1999
