At the residence of Dr E. B
Ybunff New Tear's even'n? the
young people enjoyed a social com
plimentary to Misa Inez Carter a
charming visitor from Belton.
New Tear's Day was about as
lively as a rainy Sunday. Several
of the stores the banks and post-1
office were closed. In addition to
this the heavy rain prevented the
country people from coming to
town and trade in all lines was con-
sequently very slack.
The W. 0. T. U. committee ap-
pointed to confer with the railway
officials in regard to a ladies' wait-
ing room at this place are in receipt

weather the New Year's shoot at

Several members of the Brenham
Gun Club went out in the afternoon
and did some fair shooting.
"Under the head "It's All Over
Town" the post laureate of the
Evening Press produced a neat lit-
tie poem anent la grippe. To judge
by the fact that the Temple Tribune
reproduced the item as original mat-
ter we naturally infer that "its all
over" the country as well as town.
The only contagion that approaches
3r. grippe in insidiousness seems to
be a propensity towards "cliptoma-
Tiia." One of the events of 189G which
is entitled to being engrafted on the
annals of '97 is the fact that Messrs.
Henry Eckart and Ed Witteborg
"hoofed" it to Burton Wednesday
night and were overtaken on the
road by a minature water spout
which forced them to take bhelter in
an old house by the roadside and
spend a mo3t miserably wot and un
comfortable night. It is understood
that they had no object in view in
taking the walk except to Eecure
some much needed exercise.
SUSPICIOUS CHARACTERS.
Eight weary and traveled stained
bobos disembarked from a Santa Fe
box car late Thursday night and
proceeded at once to lookout a favor
able location for securing a night 3
icpose. In .this six of them were
successful. The remaining two also
found a secure and qniet retreat
but not exactly of the nature to suit
their notions.
News of a burglary at Sealy had
just been received and in looking
ant for suspicious characters the
niebfc officers came upon the pair
trying to dispose of a few articles of
merchandise which had the appear
atice of being stolen property and

FISHED THEM OUT.
How a Burglar Operated Throngh. a
Broken Show Window.
During the holidays an eratic sky
rocket fired by a careless reveler
crashed through a corner of on3 of
Gather & Buster's show windows.
Pending an adjustment of the dam-
age by an insurance company the
aperture waB temporarily closed by
having a light plank nailed across it.
The show window contained a nice
assortment of gect's furnishing
goods including sample shoes
shirts hats and neckiies. This
tempting display of wearing ap
parel coupled with the broken win
dow pane comprised a seductive
temptation too strong to be resisted
by a midnight prowler.
Some time during Thursday night
an unknown member cf the light-
fingered fraternity helped himself
to three nice hats three pairs of fine
shoes about the same number of
shirts and balf-a-dozen elegant
neckties. The board barricade was
removed with small difficulty and
by the uso of a short stick with a
pin hook on the end the robber
fished out such things as suited him
at hia leisure.

PECULIAR FORMATION.
A Salivry Calculous of Forty Years
Growth Removed.
A peculiar lump which appeared
to be forming just beneath her
tongue gave Mrs. Mary Grabow so
much annoyance Thursday that she
thought it best to consult a physi-
cian in regard to the matter. 'Her
family doctor told her that an opera
tion would be necessary to remove
the formation and promised to call
Friday morning to perform it. The
necessity for the operation was
obviated Thursday night by the
formation coming out of its own
accord. The remarkable growth is
about the size of a pecan and is
about the color and shape of an al-
mond hull. It is known to medical
science a a "Salivry Calculous" and
is peculiarly remarkable for its
rarity and for tho length of time re-
quired in forming. The one refered
to is said by the physician to have
required forty years in forming and
tho formation is so gradual that no
pain is caused thereby.

Republic: When Miss Myrtle
Gumm of Westcrnport Md. found
that her young man had gone riding
with another lady she ran him down
emptied a revolver at him smashed
his rig chased him over the fence
and catching him warmed him well
with a buggy whip. Tho report of
the incident does nst state whether
she tied him and led him to the altar
but this is to be presumed. A man
ought to be proud of-a girl like that
