thousand or more people assembled
at Thirdfand Markot streets last
night to celebrate the delivery of
the anti-Chinese decision. The
chief addresses were by the :mti-
Chinese agitators Dr. C. C. O'Don-
nell and Dennis lvoarnej but
neither speaker succeeded in arous-
ing a high degree of enthusiasm.
It was decided to hold a procession
next Saturday night and the presi-
dents of all labor unions were
named as a committee of arrange-

was hanged here today at 10:1 1 a.
na. for the murder of Christie
AVarden at Hanover on the night of
July 17 181)1. The execution was
a bungling job. His feet touched
the 11 ior when ho went through the
drop and he was strangled to deatb.
Almy or rathor Abbott although
only thirty-five years old was one
of tne most remarkable criminals
ever known although the son of
the proud and wealthy manufac-
turer Harris Abbott of Abbott's
Mill near Silem Mass. and equal-
ly well connected on his mother's
side who died three days after his
birth.
He began his criminal career by
stealing from his school companions
at the early 3ge of ton yeaTs. From
thui until seventeen ytars i.id he
pnmmitted many crimes finally he-
ii3 sentenced lor four year- to the
penitentiary for burglary. This
broke his lather's heart and drove
him to a suicide's grave.
He h:a spent ten of the past
eighteen years in Htate's prisons
finally escaping from the Vermont
penitentiary were he was serving
fifteen years '17. lie undoubted-
ly went south where he worked for
a ranchman in Tex is as an engineer
in Georgia and as an oyster man
on the boats at Baltimore and in
the spring of 19 he turned north-
ward. lie applied for work at the farm
of Andrew Warden of Hanover
under hi shpuiiiiI name of Fiauk
C. Almy where ho remained until
a short time before the murder of
Christie Warden whom he brutally
murdered before her mother's and
sinter's eyes because she refused to
marry him.
