Valley centers the metropolitan area that covers
Hidalgo County and is bordered by neighboring
cities of Edinburg, San Juan and McAllen. Pharr s
front door is U.S. Hiway 281 which runs North to
San Antonio (230 miles North) and South into
Reynosa, Mexico (12 miles Southwest). Express-
way 83 is readily accessible for traffic wishing to
travel all points east & west in the Rio Grande
Valley.
The Census Bureau 1980 population count for the
City of Pharr was 21,381 and for the metropolitan
SMSA area of 283,229.
Mild Climate and a growing season of 327 days
makes this area a winter garden that attracts
thousands of visitors year around. In recent years
the City of Pharr has been discovered by thou-
sands of people from all parts of the country and
has been dubbed the "RV Park Capital of Texas.
Pharr is the home of excellent resort facilities
featuring golf courses, pools, tennis court, saunas,
schuffle board courts and an excellent life-style
a. . NPharr is in the center of one of the world's most
productive agricultural regions, being surrounded
by irrigated farms that produce, cotton, sorghums,
corn, sugar cane, citrus fruits, vegetables and
various nursery products.
Agribusiness continues to be a principal economic
factor in Pharr. Being in the center of two major
transportation routes Pharr is developing into a
maturing center of transportation with trucking a
major economic sector due to the Valley's leader-
ship in the production, processing and shipping of
citrus fruits, vegetable, cotton and livestock.
Investment opportunities are excellent for the con-
tinued diversification of the areas economic base;
especially for transportation centers, distribution
and light industrial manufacturing.
