"Instant Plays" In
Mexican Drama Class
"I hod to argue with n girl
but I had to do it with chicken
sounds!"
"I had to express fear while
reciting the first six lines of
"Peter Pan.'"
These are the types of com-
ments you might hear from
McMurry College drama stu-
dents who have returned from
anuary Term workshop in
Mexico.
"The teacher ran us through
vigorous loosening up exercises"
Scotty ones Amarillo freshman
explained. "Then we had to ex-
press emotion with inhuman
sounds."
Claudia Evans Abilene senior
and Reba Coolcy Sweetwater
sophomore had to argue on stage
with weird sounds.
"I had to snort like a bull"
Claudia said "while Reba tried
to imitate the wind. You can't
imagine what that docs to your
mind."
Improvisations another exer-
cise helped to develop emotional
flexibility Debbie Holder
Denver City junior said.
"Two people are given an en-
vironment a relationship and a
set of emotions" she said. "Then
the two people use their imagi-
nations to create an 'instant
play.'
"It's impossible to re-produce"
she said. "An instant of emotion
and involvement is created and
like a snow sculpture is gone.
But each scene is an experiment
and each experiment is a step
further in exploring the actor's
art."
In one of the improvisotion
acts Claudia had to play the
role of a daughter who hated her
convict father. "For some rea-
son I couldn't feel hate for the
older man who played my father
"I don't think a person can
successfully fake an emotion
even on stage if he isn't cap-
able of feeling the emotion hon-
estly." Gary Eldridgo McMurry
drama instructor said the em-
phasis of the workshop "is on
freeing the individual's inhibi-
tions as an actor so that ho may
express himself with confidence
and authority.
"There are many schools of
acting ranging from the Stani-
slvasky method (inner emotion
working to the outer presence)
to the school of our technique
in which stock elocution ges-
tures represent particular Inner
feelings.
"Each in isolation are false to
the actor and audience" El-
dridgo said. "For instance how
docs one feci the inner thoughts
