Book Reviews
The book concludes with a scholarly catalog raisonne of Moran's
watercolors, a listing of paintings in the exhibit, and an exhaustive
bibliography.
Most exhibition catalogs have limited use past the time span of the
particular exhibit they document. Any attempt to provide a catalog
with more scholarly substance than required should be applauded,
even if it is not totally successful.

Temple Houston: Lawyer with a Gun. By Glenn Shirley. (Norman:
University of Oklahoma Press, 1980. Pp. x+339. Preface, photo-
graphs, bibliography, index. $14.95.)
The accomplishments of Temple Houston are fairly well known.
He was a famous attorney and politician in Texas and Oklahoma, a
man whose barbed tongue bested every opponent. He shot two men,
one of whom died. His own death was a tragedy.
Shirley has given us a book filled with contradictions. There is a
massive bibliography, but not a single footnote. Some of the writing
is soaring. Much of it is plodding. As for the subject, Temple Houston
sometimes disappears completely from the book as the author gets off
on related matters.
Thus the strength of this book is not Temple Houston, for this is
only incidentally his biography. The book's power lies in its descrip-
tions and its background of times and people. Shirley rarely mentions
anybody, no matter how unimportant, without adding paragraphs of
introduction. We learn who owns the restaurants and who works in
the stables. Society's pecking order is not ignored.
Shirley is the world's leading authority on desperados in the Texas-
Oklahoma region. He proves it again in this book, and that's what
makes the biography worthwhile.
