Erastus ("Deaf") Smith was born in New York State in 1787 and settled
in Texas in 1821. Well known as a scout, Smith served actively in that ca-
pacity during the Texas Revolution. He is perhaps best remembered by
Texans for his role at the battle of San Jacinto. Before the fighting there
began, Houston ordered Smith to destroy Vince's Bridge, an action which
would prevent further reinforcements from reaching Santa Anna, and
which would also prevent either the Mexican or Texas army from falling
back to Harrisburg. Following Texas Independence, Smith became the cap-
tain of a ranger company for a period, then retired to Richmond, Texas,
where he died and was buried in 1837.
