Renewed sit-ins meant that the fifty-seven students who had been
released on their own recognizance Wednesday violated the condition
for their charges to be held in abeyance. Consequently, Sheriff Earl
Franklin began processing warrants for the fifty-seven and headed to
both campuses to make arrests later that night. As a crowd of students
gathered around, Franklin and his deputies read a list of those sought.
The students, many of whom had been quietly watching television in
their dorms, willingly filed into the police cars as the sheriff called their
names. Bishop College registrar J. D. Hurd described the students as
"very subdued. No one was crying or anything of that sort. They were
just ready to go to jail." Six students were not taken into custody until
