well as many other books, presented the 2002 Lale Lecture during the
East Texas Historical Association's fortieth anniversary meeting in Nacog-
doches in September. The expanded program was arranged by the
ETHA's first vice president, TSHA member and author Ty Cashion, and
featured ETHA executive director and editor Archie P. McDonald, for-
mer president of the TSHA, in a special Fortieth Anniversary session.
The fall issue of the East Texas Historical Journal contains a fortieth an-
niversary bonus in addition to the seven articles on the history of forests,
forestry, and forest products in East Texas: a multimedia, interactive CD-
ROM supplement to the article, "The History of the Stephen F. Austin Ex-
perimental Forest" (by Carey C. Russell, Ronald E. Thill, and David Kul-
havy), published in that issue. The CD, the work of graduate student
Russell in the SFA Arthur Temple College of Forestry, provides an audio-
visual tour of the forest, interviews with many of those who have worked
there over the years, and maps to orient the viewer to features mentioned
in the article. As SFA historian Mark Barringer says in the introduction to
the issue, this "is only a sign of things to come." One of the things that he
may have in mind is the forty-year comprehensive subject index to the
journal that is now underway. He is now seeking funding for the project
and expects that it will be an Internet-based, searchable document.
The spring meeting of the ETHA will be in Marshall on February
14-15. Program chairs are Linda Hudson, Second Vice President Gail
Beil, and Margaret Agnor, all of Marshall. If you are interested in pre-
senting a paper, contact Linda at lhudson@etbu.edu.
Michael Hazel, one of the organizers of the Fifth Annual Legacies Dallas
History Conference, has issued a call for papers for the conference to be
held in October, 2003. The theme for the conference is "People Who
Shaped Dallas." All papers must be based on original research and must
not have been presented or published elsewhere. All presenters will re-
ceive an honorarium of $300, and the best papers will be published in
Legacies: A History Journal for Dallas and North Central Texas. Please submit a
brief summary of your proposal by February 3, 2003, to Dallas History
Conference, 1717 Gano Street, Dallas 75215. Those selected will be noti-
fied by March 3. The TSHA is one of the eleven sponsors of this event.
The Haley Memorial Library and History Center in Midland has been
hosting a series of wonderful public programs of late, and the recent
Gathering and Storytelling on September 26 was no exception. The high-
