This painting is the only known purported image of James W. Fannin Jr.
Summerfield G. Roberts purchased the painting (along with Fannin's watch and
other items) and gave the painting to the Dallas Historical Society. It was attrib-
uted to Samuel F. B. Morse, but there is no definitive provenance. See Paul
Rosenfield, "Treasure Comes Home," Dallas Times Herald Sunday Magazine, Mar.
