Southwestern Historical Quarterly
frontier judge and editor Edgar Rye, The Quirt and the Spur appealed to a
reading public eager for stories about the frontier, a world that was fast
receding from popular memory. In writing his opus, Rye focused on a
rough and tumble outpost called The Flat, located near old Fort Griffin
during the 187os, and drew upon his own experiences living and work-
ing there as well as the tales he heard about the place secondhand.
Cashion, who authored the THSA publication Pigskin Pulpit: A Social
History of Texas High School Football Coaches, observes that while the book
is "full of errors of fact as well as outright fabrication," it has helped to
shape the perception of Old Northwest Texas as a wild and woolly fron-
tier and has told a story that is the "stuff of legend."
As this issue was going to press we learned that former TSHA presi-
dent and respected historian Margaret Swett Henson passed away Janu-
ary 22, 2001, in Houston. Margaret served as an advisory editor and
contributed forty-two articles for the New Handbook of Texas. She served
on the Harris County Historical Commission since 1976 and was presi-
dent of the TSHA from 1997-1998. She was a member of the Tejano
Association for Historic Preservation, Southern Historical Association
and the East Texas Historical Association. Her work as an author and
dedicated researcher were widely recognized and she will be greatly
missed.
A memorial service for Margaret was planned for January 27 at St.
James Presbyterian Church in LaPorte. A second memorial service will
be at the conclusion of the TSHA annual meeting on Saturday, March
3, in Houston. Those in attendance at the annual meeting will be told
of the location and time of the March 3 service. In lieu of flowers, the
family requests donations be made to the Texas State Historical Asso-
ciation Endowment, 2.306 Sid Richardson Hall, University of Texas,
Austin 78712 or to The Friends of the Clayton Library, 5300 Caro-
line, Houston 77004.466
