Meetings
As we approach 1997 and the centennial of the Texas State Historical
Association, it is time for TSHA members and other friends of Texas his-
tory to start planning for our special Centennial Year Annual Meeting.
On March 6-8, 1997, we will gather at Austin's Renaissance (formerly
Stouffer) Hotel to hear the greatest number of presentations ever put
together for an annual meeting. Under the guidance of Cynthia Bee-
man, the program committee has arranged for over oo00 presentations
including papers, panels, and sessions on Texas Rangers; women in the
early years of the TSHA; the State Police during Reconstruction; the
Camino Real; the Texas-Mexican Border; performances of cowboy poet-
ry; images of Texas women; blacks and health care; the roots of Texas
country music; and many others on ranching, oil, Tejano politics, educa-
tion, the environment, and material culture. We will also have our usual
joint sessions with some of our fellow historical groups: the Texas
Catholic Historical Society; the Texas Folklore Society; and the Texas
Oral History Association among others. All of the entertaining annual
meeting features that you have come to expect will be part of our cen-
tennial celebration-banquets and guest speakers; live and silent auc-
tions of rare Texas books, maps, and art; book displays by the leading
publishers of Texana and signings by their authors; social events and re-
ceptions; and any number of special events and surprises which will cele-
brate and highlight the first too years of TSHA history. We will be
letting you know here and in your Riding Line newsletter about our spe-
cial plans and guests for this once-in-a-lifetime meeting. The Centennial
Annual Meeting is being held March 6-8, 1997, so make your plans to
be in Austin for all of the history and fun.
The Southern Association for Women Historians invites proposals for
the fourth Southern Conference on Women's History to be held June
12-14, 1997, at the College of Charleston in South Carolina. The con-
ference provides a forum for the delivery of presentations and the ex-
change of ideas relating to all aspects of women's history. It seeks to
reflect the best in recent scholarship, especially by young scholars and
graduate students. It also seeks to reflect the diversity of women's experi-
ences and to document the history of women from a wide variety of
racial, class, and ethnic backgrounds. This call for papers includes pro-
posals for individual papers and complete sessions as well as panel dis-
cussions, roundtable discussions, and media presentations. Each
proposal, whether for individual papers or panels, should include two
copies of a one- to two-page synopsis and a brief curriculum vitae forJuly
