Au-Pia Goodle was a peyote leader who reportedly owned the first Bible issued
by early missionaries in southwestern Oklahoma. Kiowa raiders were among the
fiercest opponents faced by the U.S. Army in its nineteenth-century campaigns
to make the Texas frontier safe for Anglo-American settlers.544
