"The Pioneer Sunday School" is the only picture in Homer S. Thrall's Pictorial
History of Texas (1879) which includes women. While early historians such as
Thrall disregarded many of women's contributions to Texas history, they recog-
nized women's prominence in the area of religion. In Sunday school and
church, women and men, boys and girls, interacted more equally than elsewhere
