Affairs of the Association
RON TYLER
We were deeply saddened to learn of the deaths this spring of Anne
Brindley of Galveston, a former member of the Executive Council and
president of the Association, and J. Conrad Dunagan of Monahans, a
former Executive Council member, president, life member, and hon-
orary life member of the Association.
ANNUAL MEETING
We had a great annual meeting in San Antonio. Meeting Coordinator
Colleen Kain reports that 704 persons registered. The Thursday evening
presidential reception at the IMAX at Rivercenter was well attended,
and the visit to the newly refurbished Alamo was special. The Associa-
tion thanks the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, custodians of the
Alamo, for the invitation. All the banquets were sold out, and both the
regular and silent auctions attracted large audiences, as usual.
Next year will be the one-hundredth annual meeting, and we hope to
make it a special event with the publication of the New Handbook of Texas.
It will not, however, be our centennial meeting. The problem arises
from the fact that members of the Association apparently had two meet-
ings during their founding year of 1897 and counted both of them.
Thus, next year will be our one-hundredth meeting, but 1997 will be
our centennial year.
The Centennial Committee, consisting of chairman Alwyn Barr, J. C.
Martin, Shirley Caldwell, Dorman Winfrey, F6lix D. Almariz Jr., Robert
H. Thonhoff, Colleen Kain, and Ron Tyler, is already at work on appro-
priate activities and commemorations and will report at a later date.
One suggestion that seems to have a great deal of support is that the
publication of the New Handbook at our one-hundredth meeting next
year should kick off a year-long celebration, which will culminate at our
centennial meeting in 1997.
The 1996 meeting will be at the Stouffer Austin Hotel on February
29-March 2.
