Opposite page: In every style of American popular music, from ragtime to rock
and roll, country to conjunto, blues to jazz, Texans have been among the great
originators, stylists, and performers. This publicity shot byJamesJ. Kriegmann of
New York portrays Lubbock native Charles Hardin Holley (1936-1959), better
known as Buddy Holly, whose style and music had an enormous impact on the
world of popular music. The Beatles, among many others, claimed this rock and
roll pioneer as one of their favorite artists and most influential predecessors.
Holly is only one of many Texas musicians whose lives and works are the subject
of books and articles listed in the bibliography of Texas music beginning on
page 585 of this issue. CN 04815. Courtesy Prints and Photographs Collection, Center
