Southwestern Historical Quarterly
Meetings
The ninety-ninth annual meeting of the TSHA will be held on March
2-4, 1995, at the Wyndham Hotel in San Antonio. Plan to be there for
the historical papers, the banquets and receptions, the auctions of rare
books and artifacts, and the sheer enjoyment of being in San Antonio.
You will be able to hear more than one hundred presentations on sub-
jects ranging from Texas cowboy ballads to wildlife conservation, from
Mexican American folk healers to the civil rights struggle in Texas, and
from the Texas Rangers in the Mexican War to a critical look at histori-
cal sources on the Alamo. We have no doubt that whatever your particu-
lar interest, you are likely to hear a paper on it at the meeting.
Our featured banquet speakers include historian Janet Schmelzer,
from Tarleton State University, on Texas women in the World War II
Army Nurse Corps at the Women and Texas History Luncheon on
Thursday, March 2. T. R. Fehrenbach, author of the best-selling history
of Texas, Lone Star, will present the Friday, March 3, luncheon talk on
the Alamo as a complex cultural symbol. Fellow San Antonian F6lix Al-
mariz Jr., the incoming president of the TSHA, will present the Fellows'
Luncheon address on Saturday, March 4, on Santa Anna and his gener-
als. TSHA President Robert H. Thonhoff will deliver his presidential ad-
dress on Friday evening on "Texas and the American Revolution."
Once again, a highlight of the meeting will be our regular auction,
held on Friday at 3:oo P.M., and the silent auction, held throughout the
meeting. Both will feature our usual assortment of rare books, manu-
scripts, maps, prints, and other Texana in all price ranges. The auction
committee has done its usual fine job of organizing the auction and
seeking out prize items for the auction block. Come and get that rare
book you've always wanted, or that beautiful map of Texas to hang on
your wall, and remember that all proceeds from the auction go to sup-
port the Association and the cause of Texas history. If you would like a
copy of the auction catalogue in advance of the meeting, please contact
Evelyn Stehling at our office. And be sure to block out March 2-4, 1995,
on your calendar and join us in San Antonio for the learning and the
fun.
Since many of you will already be in San Antonio for the TSHA annu-
al meeting on March 2-4, be sure to stay in town for the meetings of the
Alamo Battlefield Association (March 4, 1-5 P.M.) and the Alamo De-
fenders Descendents Association (March 5) at the Menger Hotel.
The ABA's second annual meeting will feature papers on topics re-
flecting the history of Mission San Antonio de Valero (the Alamo) fromJanuary
