In Defense of a Legend, Bill Groneman suggests that editor Jesis Sanchez Garza
may have been a party to fraud in publishing the diary of Jose Enrique de la
Pefia, a diary that Groneman believes to be a forgery. Groneman directly accuses
Sinchez Garza of having launched the story that an 1836 edition of the diary
had been suppressed by Mexican authorities, in order to explain why there are
no surviving copies of that edition. On this point, Groneman is mistaken.
Sanchez Garza made it very clear that the diary remained unpublished until this
