Meetings
The 1993 TSHA annual meeting takes place this year on the 2ooth
anniversary of the birth of Sam Houston and it will be held, appropri-
ately, in the city named in his honor. We will gather in Houston at the
Stouffer Greenway Plaza Hotel on March 4-6, 1993, for three days of
Texas history at its best. In honor of his 2ooth birthday, we have several
sessions focusing on Houston the man. One will examine his life during
the 185os. A second session, featuring several direct descendants of
Houston who will utilize unpublished family correspondence, will at-
tempt to separate the man from the legend. Chairman Gregg Cantrell
and his program committee have put together a strong batch of ses-
sions, including ones on African American soldiers on the West Texas
frontier, the roles of Texas women during World War II, entertain-
ment in early twentieth century Texas, and differing views of the Mexi-
can War. Other sessions will focus on how naturalists viewed the South-
west in the mid-nineteenth century, the ways in which environmental
history can inform our understanding of a time and place, and the
music of World War II Texas. We are once again sponsoring joint ses-
sions with a number of organizations, including the Texas Catholic His-
torical Society (a session on African American Texans in the Catholic
Church), the Society of Southwest Archivists (a session on Kennedy
assassination materials in Texas), and the Texas Historical Commission
(a session on the Civilian Conservation Corps in New Deal Texas). And
these topics are just a sample of the nearly loo papers being presented.
As always, we will have our annual auctions, live and silent, of books,
maps and prints; special speakers; banquets; receptions; and plenty of
opportunities to visit with your fellow Texas history lovers. Put March
4-6, 1993, on your calendar and make plans to join us in Houston.
Jesuis F. (Frank) de la Teja, professor of history at Southwest Texas
State University in San Marcos, is chairman of the program committee
for the 1994 TSHA annual meeting which will be held in Austin. Frank
and his committee are looking for papers for the 1994 meeting on any
aspect of Texas history. Every year the committee makes an effort to
have sessions that cover the entire Texas experience, and we always
manage to have a wide range of topics, including military, social, eth-
nic, local, oral, and nearly every other kind of history.
As we have noted in past calls for papers, the committee prefers that
you organize complete sessions with friends and colleagues. It is often274
