Handbook of Texas
We continue to make excellent progress in revising the Handbook.
Managing editor Doug Barnett reports that the staff additions are
working out well, and he is confident that we will meet or exceed most
of the goals that we established at the beginning of the year.
The specific work accomplished in major areas of the project is sum-
marized in the table below. We have achieved significant advances in
preparing entries and have also begun some of the final editorial tasks

the fund now showed a surplus of $59,347.75 at the end of the year.
This is explained in notes 4 and 6 in the audit (page 567); each of the
funds listed in note 4 has been decreased by the amount shown.
At its October 1991 meeting, the Executive Council adopted a bud-
get for the Handbook with the intent of raising the money necessary to
fund it, but to use expendable portions of the Handbook endowment if
we could not. Since then we have received grants from the George and
Mary Josephine Hamman Foundation of Houston ($5,000), the R. W.
Fair Foundation of Tyler ($1o,ooo), and the Anchorage Foundation of
Houston ($500).
Last fall I visited with Gary Barker, who runs the StarText on-line
data service for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. He was most interested in
the Handbook and said that he would like to make it available on Star-
