and very strong foundation on which our current lists are based:
Oberholser's The Bird Life of T exas, edited by Edgar Kincaid and pub-
lished in 1974, was not only a monumental undertaking in itself, but it
was also the genesis of a number of other important publications, nota-
bly Ridgely and Tudor's The Birds of South America, of which the first of
four volumes has just been published. John Reader's Man on Earth, the
Book-of-the-Month Club's main selection last month, owes its place on
our list to Frank's farsightedness and to the generosity of Mrs. Verna
McLean and her daughter, Mrs. Ruth Bowers, who established the
Corrie Herring Hooks endowment for books in natural history. Man on
Earth is number ten in the Hooks series. Frank had many such publish-
ing inspirations and became exceedingly adept at raising funds for
them, often establishing series in their subject areas.
