COMMUNITYR II-C

IN CRISIS Harrison County,
Texas, i850o-88o
How do communities change? What is the impact and long-
term effect of major crises and catastrophies upon the structure
and function of political, social, and economic institutions?
Randolph B. Campbell examines one southern community-
Harrison County, Texas-to learn an answer to these questions
for the period 1850 to i88o, which spanned postfrontier ante-
bellum plantation culture, the Secession crisis, the Civil War, Re-
construction, and the restoration of local power to the South.
Using facts drawn from a wide variety of sources, Campbell
first describes prewar "Old Harrison's" social, political, and eco-
nomic structure; the life-styles of the several classes that made up
the community; and the basic beliefs and values which governed
the people's actions. Then he gives the reader an outline of the
events of the Civil War as they affected the county and particular
individuals in the county, followed by a summary of the course of
presidential Reconstruction, congressional Reconstruction, and
the resurgence of conservative power in Texas and the county.
Finally, he draws a picture of the i88o county and analyzes the
changes and the continuity which can be seen in a comparison of
the prewar community and the postwar community.
RANDOLPH B. CAMPBELL is professor of history at North Texas
State University.
