Style Guide and Information
for Contributors
MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION
Authors are requested to submit four copies of their manuscripts to
the Editor. The title of the article should appear on the manuscript, but
the author's name should appear on a separate title page. The entire
article, including block quotations, footnotes, and figure captions,
should be typed double-spaced on one side of 8L/ x I inch noneras-
able white paper with at least a one-inch margin on all four sides. Foot-
notes should be typed as a separate section at the end of the article. All
pages of the manuscript should be numbered consecutively through-
out. In most cases, we consider forty pages (double-spaced, including
footnotes) to be the maximum acceptable length for a manuscript. Ex-
cept in the case of unusually long articles, we prefer that transitional
sentences be used in place of subheadings or section breaks indicated
by blank space.
STYLE
For most matters of style we follow the Chicago Manual of Style
(13th ed.; Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1982) with minor vari-
ations. For spelling and hyphenation of words we follow Webster's Ninth
New Collegiate Dictionary. If footnotes are drafted according to the Chz-
cago Manual, we usually find it quite easy to make any needed adjust-
ments. Please note that as of volume g91 of the Quarterly we give the
names of publishers.
FOOTNOTES
We ask that documentation be given for every factual statement not
of the most common knowledge. It is permissible for an author to
group several citations to a paragraph in a single footnote at the end of
that paragraph, but we ask that citations for two or more paragraphs
not be grouped together in one note. In other words, each paragraph
that needs documentation should have its own footnote. Footnotes are
