for the semester. Here, amazingly to me, seemed to be an articulate,
scholarly affirmation of the ardent populism that had been the watch-
word of my political upbringing. One day, seeing Dr. Webb in his office, I
took courage in hand, entered, and self-consciously introduced myself.
I carried a more-or-less average case of veteran's identity crisis, plus a
wavering self-confidence, the latter because little of academic distinc-
tion marked my undergraduate years. With that fine human touch that
he had, Dr. Webb promptly dispelled my unease.
Dr. Webb wanted to know how I came to read his book; we discussed
it; and soon he remarked, "I was mad when I wrote it." In one of those
horrifying moments of spontaneous response, I blurted out: "Yes sir. It
shows it!" In that split second of realizing what I had done, the feeling
of having said the wrong thing was overwhelming. But Dr. Webb re-
acted with that characteristic gleeful laugh of his that seemed to light
up his whole body. I knew I had found a friend, and a very human one
at that.
Presently Dr. Webb turned the conversation away from Divided We
Stand to, of all things, me. He sincerely inquired into whom this ob-
scure graduate student was, where he came from, and what he was
