dancy General Archive of the Eastern Interior Provinces" in the Oc-
tober 1986 issue of The Americas: A Quarterly Review of Inter-American
Cultural History. This paper, which focuses on the significant body of
documents that were formed by the Commandancy General, details
the dispersion of this archive during the early years of Mexican auton-
omy. In late 1987 the article received First Place in the Presidio La
Bahia Awards and it has been included in the offprint series of the In-
stitute of Latin American Studies at UT, Austin. Copies will be free

Accessions
Don E. Carleton, director of the Barker Texas History Center at the
University of Texas at Austin, has announced the receipt of a complete
set of legal documents and other materials related to the recently con-
cluded Pennzoil/Texaco trial. The more than four-year trial that ended
in April, 1988, arose from a lawsuit that Pennzoil filed against Texaco,
charging that Texaco had interfered with Pennzoil's agreement to ac-
quire part of the Getty Oil Company. A jury verdict in Houston
awarded Pennzoil $10.3 billion. The case resulted in the largest verdict
and the largest settlement in legal history. At various times each side
had up to 1oo lawyers involved in the case.
William S. Livingston, UT vice president and dean of graduate stud-
ies, said the Pennzoil materials will be useful for research by students in
law, business, history, and communications. Carleton says that the ma-
terials are "well put together-it's a ready-to-go collection." He said
that the gift includes some 23,000 pages of trial transcripts, a set of all
depositions taken in the lengthy case, the legal documents and plead-
ings entered in state and federal courts, and a comprehensive collec-
tion of the major news coverage-both print and electronic-given to
the litigation.
Carleton also noted that, while the Barker received the most exten-
sive collection of materials from the controversial case, Pennzoil also
gave two other universities some documents. Stanford University re-
ceived materials pertaining to contract issues, and Northwestern Uni-
versity received a subset of items limited to the public relations aspects
and the press accounts of the trial.624
