Company, sent the following letter:
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Winfrey,
Just before his death, J. Frank Dobie requested us to send you a copy of his
newest book with his compliments.
We are sending you, under separate cover, a copy of his last book The Cow
People.
The Junior Historian organization had always been important to our
family. I had been a member since my high school days; Ruth Carolyn
had been active and had won a first prize one year. Following Dobie's
death we gave an award in his memory for the 1974 Junior Historian
Writing Contest. Mrs. Dobie wrote to us:
Dear Dorman and Ruth Carolyn,
I want you to know that I appreciate very much your attaching Frank's name
to the award you offered the Junior Historians. It is by such action that he is
remembered as well as by the books he left. I appreciate the warmth of your
remarks and also your coming after the program to tell me you were glad I
came. I was glad too.
Cordially yours,
Bertha Dobie
The Junior Historian movement continues to inspire young adults,
as it did this author many years ago. And the far-reaching effects of
both Webb and Dobie are evidenced in the remembrances that follow.

pay telephone across from his office. We were to discover only later that
he had given the number as his office phone (faculty in those days had
no phones of their own).
Webb's enthusiasm and his fascination with his subject made his
course on the Great Plains most enjoyable. Having had this pleasant ex-
perience my first year of work on the Ph.D., I looked forward to taking
his year-long seminar on the Great Frontier. Webb interviewed each
