This Long Star flag, which inspired the research leading to this article, ap-
peared in color on the cover of the January 1986 issue of the Southwestern His-

Houston and that had provided for "a national flag, to be denominated
the 'National Standard of Texas,' the conformation of which shall be an
azure ground, with a large golden star central."2 The 1839 law pro-
vided "That from and after the passage of this act, the national flag of
Texas shall consist of a blue perpendicular stripe of the width of one
third of the whole length of the flag, with a white star of five points in
the centre thereof, and two horizontal stripes of equal breadth, the
upper stripe white, the lower red, of the length of two thirds of the
whole length of the flag; any thing in the act to which this is an amend-
ment to the contrary notwithstanding."" The flag in the Star of the Re-
public Museum conforms to this description.
However, this flag was not borne by the members of the Mier expedi-
tion in 1842. That expedition was neither authorized nor sanctioned by
the government of the Republic of Texas, and it bore no official Lone
Star flag of the Republic; thus, no Lone Star flag could have been cap-
tured by the Mexicans in the battle of Mier. Even assuming that a flag
had been captured in that battle, it certainly would never have be-
