Was There a Mier Expedition Flag?
JOSEPH MILTON NANCE*
ON THE FRONT COVER OF THE JANUARY 1986 ISSUE OF THE Southwest-
ern Historical Quarterly appeared a reproduction of a Lone Star na-
tional flag of the Republic of Texas. The editor's speculations about the
history of that flag have aroused curiosity as to whether it was the flag
of the Mier expedition. The editor provides the following comments
about the photograph:
The specific Lone Star flag on the cover, known as the "Mier" flag, is said to
have been taken into Mexico by the Texas soldiers sometime between 1840 and
1850. It may have belonged to members of the Mier expedition, which invaded
Mexico in December, 1842. The flag was reportedly captured in battle and sub-
sequently belonged to the town of Mier, Mexico. Mr. Ram6n de la Garza y
Pefia, a resident of Camargo, Mexico, who died in 1952 at the age of ninety-
two, claimed that when he was a small boy the flag was brought to Camargo for
a celebration and was never returned. For many years it hung in the police sta-
tion in Camargo.'
This flag is now in the Star of the Republic Museum at Washington-
on-the-Brazos. In workmanship and material it appears to be an au-
thentic and fairly well-preserved Lone Star flag of the Republic of
Texas, of the design provided for by an act of the First Session of the
Third Congress of Texas. This act was approved by President Mira-
beau Buonaparte Lamar on January 25, 1839, amending an earlier law
of December io, 1836, that had been approved by President Sam
