citement of scholarly writing fashioned by an artist. To Webb it was
"high adventure," for me the beginning of a road that branched off in
various directions; but always the master craftsman was there, beckon-
ing the novice to serve his art with dedication and love. The Great Fron-
tier convinced me to return to Austin and pursue graduate training in
history. By design my first seminar was with Webb, and looking back I
realize that experience colored my later professional approach, both in
teaching and writing, whetting my appetite for the spirit of adventure
Webb insisted upon.
By the time I met Webb he was in semiretirement and taught only a
graduate seminar on the American West. He was then working on a
volume for the New American Nation Series, a book he never com-
pleted. He was also president of the American Historical Association at
the time and considered the "grand old man" of the University of
Texas history department. Webb would laugh at the term, but if histo-
rians can have glamour, he had it-at least for this beginner who had
spent his boyhood in Dallas movie palaces, fantasizing about the beau-
tiful people from Hollywood's Golden Age. Webb introduced me to an-
other kind of beauty- one that involved integrity, honing your craft,
and growth along lines you determine for yourself.
