GLEN E. LICH*
WITH COMBINED SUPPORT FROM YALE UNIVERSITY, THE NATIONAL
Endowment for the Humanities, the Foreign Ministry of the
Federal Republic of Germany, and the German Consulate General in
Houston, I recently began a study of the original Adelsverein archives
acquired by the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale.
During one week in December, 1986, and two weeks in August, 1987, I
examined 11,449 manuscript pages of the approximately eight to ten
thousand documents that the Beinecke staff estimates the collection to
contain in thirty-nine boxes. Fifteen remaining boxes were only inven-
toried to confirm that they contained mostly financial records from the
period 1842-1894.'
Known formally as the Verein zum Schutze deutschler Einwanderer
in Texas (Society for the Protection of German Immigrants in Texas),
and popularly called the Adelsverein or Texas Verein, this league was a
stock company of about twenty German princes, nobles, and indepen-

merous articles.
'In addition to its many thousand manuscript pages, the collection includes over one hun-
dred printed items, many of which are unrecorded in standard bibliographies. Nearly all of
them are broadsides, but they often contain considerable information about the organization
and operations of the Verein. A preliminary review by the Beinecke staff suggests that twenty-
five of the pieces are dated 1845 or earlier, of which only one is recorded in Thomas Streeter's
bibliography (Thomas W. Streeter, Bibliography of Texas, 1795-1845 13 pts. in 5 vols.; Cam-
bridge, Mass.: Harvard University Press, 1955- 96o]). A list of these pieces should be available
in 1988, along with a finding aid for the entire collection. A full box and folder list has been
compiled, and a complete scope and contents note will be available soon. Copies will be avail-
able from the Beinecke for $5.00.
