Southwestern Historical Quarterly
and an active member of the Association, says the Lee materials will be
an addition of "immense value" to the center's massive photographic
archive, which deals primarily with images of Texas and the Southwest.
Lee had lived in Austin since 1949 and had amassed a remarkable record
of life in the Southwest during a period of rapid change. His ability to
portray with empathy the daily lives, troubles, and joys of ordinary peo-
ple first brought him to national prominence between 1939 and 1942.
During that period he was one of the major participants in the Farm Securi-
ty Administration's effort to photograph the impact of the depression on
the farms and small towns of America. Some of the giants of American
photography who also worked on that project were Walker Evans, Carl
Mydans, and Dorothea Lange. Lee's contributions to the FSA project
are now housed in the Library of Congress and are not part of the gift
to UT, Austin. Lee's significant career is documented in F. Jack Hurley's
Russell Lee, Photographer.
An important recent acquisition of the Houston Metropolitan Research
Center is the Harper Leiper Photographic Collection. The collection con-
sists of several hundred thousand negatives that cover Harper Leiper's
activity as a commercial photographer in Houston from 1945 to 1974.
Most of the negatives are black and white 4 x 5s, with some 8 x 10s,
and some color negatives. The collection also includes several thousand
original prints. Leiper's work includes portraits, group pictures, and
photographs of events and architecture. Together these photographs docu-
ment the growth of Houston in its dynamic post - World War II period.
The HMRC has also acquired several thousand negatives, dating from
1955 to 1965, taken by Jack Stiles, a photographer who often worked with
Leiper. The Harper Leiper Collection, along with the Jack Stiles Collec-
tion, is an outstanding addition to the photographic holdings of the
HMRC, which now number over 1.5 million images of Houston people,
places, and events. For more information contact the HMRC, 500 McKin-
ney, Houston 77002.
