probably the Florida barred owl, Strix varia georgica Latham; (16)
"Lepus Timidus of a very large size" (p. 272), probably the black-
tailed jackrabbit, Lepus californicus melanotis Mearns.; (17) "a flying
squirrel perfectly black" (p. 274), probably Glaucomys volans satura-
tus A. H. Howell; (18) "White wolves" (p. 274), the plains lobo wolf,
Canis lupus nubilus Say; (19) "a species of Antilope" (p. 275), the
American pronghorn (Antilocapra spp.); (2o) and (21) "two kinds of
Plum" (p. 154), in the area of their sighting, probably the Chickasaw
plum (Prunus angustifolia Marsh.) and either the wildgoose plum
(P. munsonia Wight 8c Hedr.) or the Mexican plum (P. mexicana
Wats.); (22) "a small blue [grape] that ripens about the first of June"
(pp. 154, 157), probably a muscadine, perhaps Muscadinia rotundifolia
(Michx.) Small, but possibly a mustang or another species of Vitis.
Custis's unicorn was, of course, a chimera.
