Harkort nevertheless spent the last months of his life in the service of
Texas liberty-erecting coastal fortifications for assaults from Mexico
that never came.
51lHerman Vollrath Ehrenberg (1816-1866) came to Texas in 1835 with the New
Orleans Greys. He participated in the capture of San Antonio and later was with Colonel
James W. Fannin at Goliad but escaped the massacre there. Upon returning to Germany,
he published in 1843 a narrative of his experiences in Texas entitled Texas und seine
