Thomas Jefferson Chambers was born in Virginia on April 13, 1802. He
first came to Texas in 1829 to assist Juan Antonio Padilla in putting the
colonization system into effect. In 1834 he was appointed as superior judge
to the newly created superior court of the state of Coahuila and Texas.
Chambers played an active role in the events culminating in the Texas
Revolution, serving as a major general of reserves, and charged with pro-
curing volunteers and arms from the United States. Chambers was later a
member of the Secession Convention and went to Virginia in 1861 to offer
his services to the Confederate Army. He was assassinated on March 15,
1865, as he sat in his house, Chambersia, at Anahuac.
