was less generous: the amount of $1,500 was allocated on September
14, 1883, for "special equipments" of history and literature, mental
and moral science, mathematics, Latin 8c Greek, modern languages,
and the Department of Law. The key for allocations within that

gents resolved at their initial meeting of November 16, 1881, that
"Judge Hastings of California be invited to be present" at the meet-
ings of the board so as to give the board "the benefit of his experience
and information on the subject of the organization and future opera-
