ANNUAL MEETING
Members gathered at the Marriott Hotel in Austin on March 4-6,
1982, for the eighty-sixth annual meeting. Over 6oo persons attended
the various functions. Attendees at the meeting had twenty-two ses-
sions to choose from, while 86 persons chaired sessions, presented pa-
pers, or served as commentators. All of the sessions were well attended.
The William M. Morrison Memorial Auction of Texana on Friday
afternoon netted $8,602. The proceeds will go toward funding the re-
vised Handbook.
AWARDS
The annual Coral H. Tullis Award of $1,ooo for the most important
book published in the field of Texas history during the past year went
to James M. Smallwood for Time of Hope, Time of Despair: Black
Texans During Reconstruction. Smallwood is associate professor of
history at Oklahoma State University.
The H. Bailey Carroll Award of $500 went to Willard B. Robinson
for the best article in Volume LXXXV of the Quarterly. Robinson, a
nationally recognized architectural historian, is the author of "Houses
of Worship in Nineteenth-Century Texas," which appeared in the
January issue of the Quarterly.
INSTITUTE OF TEXAS STUDIES
For the ninth year the Association, in cooperation with the Depart-
ment of History at the University of Texas, Austin, offered the Insti-
tute of Texas Studies, a program providing an intensive interdiscipli-
nary approach to the study of Texas. Forty-nine teachers and librarians
attended the two-week offering.
WEBB HISTORICAL SOCIETY
The Society reached a milestone this year with the inauguration of
Touchstone, a new historical journal published at East Texas Baptist
College in connection with the TSHA. Dr. Gwin Morris, dean at
ETBC, Dr. Sheridan Nichols, professor of history at the college, and
THSA staff member David C. De Boe worked for several years to bring122
