Southwestern Historical Quarterly
The Texana Auction of the Decade promises to be an exciting
event. Scheduled for November 6-7 at the Inn on the Park Hotel in
Houston, the auction will bring together a fine list of Texas collectibles
that will delight everyone that seeks valuable and rare Texana.
The items will be available for viewing from 12 to 4 P.M. and the
formal activities will begin at 5:30 P.M. on November 6. Cocktails will
precede the black tie, $1 oo-a-plate, invitational dinner. The auction of
items will start at 7:30 P.M. A handsome catalog will give vital infor-
mation on the seventy-five-plus items to be auctioned off Friday
evening.
On Saturday morning the auction resumes at 1o:oo A.M. and will
continue until 4:oo P.M., with a break for lunch. The Saturday auction
is open to the general public. Admission will be $5 per person.
Close to two hundred items will be auctioned off over the two-day
period, including an Alamo letter from William B. Travis to Governor
Henry Smith, several letters of Sam Houston, and a 1723 letter of
Father Antonio Margil. A rare Texas Star medal issued by Santa Anna
after the Texas campaign is among the collectibles.
Paintings by Texas artists will constitute an important category.
Among the offerings will be works by Melvin C. Warren, Frank
Reaugh, Ronald Thomason, Robert Wood, Bruce Marshall, Bill
Kolbe, Ancel Nunn, Julian Onderdonk, Harold D. Bugbee, Porfirio
Salinas, and other well-known Texas artists.
Leon Blair will have two miniature horses in Houston for the affair.
Sue Bently and George O. Jackson located some fine early Texas fur-
niture for the auction. Among the interesting items is a collection of
wines put together by Val Taylor from all the Texas vineyards.
In Canyon and the Panhandle area William C. Griggs uncovered
art by Harold D. Bugbee and Frank Reaugh. Joe Marchman con-
tributed to the art category. Hugh Fitzsimmons located firearms, and
J. C. Martin obtained some excellent maps.
The auction plans have been developed by Chairman J. P. Bryan,
Jr., and his committee of T. L. and Evelyn Wilson and Ron C. Tyler
for art; F. Lee Lawrence for documents and manuscripts; Paul G. Bell,
Jr., for maps; Dan E. Kilgore and John H. Jenkins for books; Faith
Bybee and William J. Hill for furniture; and Clifton M. Caldwell
for Texana events. Linda Wilson is serving as coordinator.
To all of the above and to many others, the Association is grateful
for the time, money, and energy these good friends have contributed
to make the auction a great success. Thank you all.188
