William H. Sandusky was born in Virginia in 1813 and came to Texas
about 1839. That year he received an appointment to assist in surveying
and laying out Austin, while also serving as artist and draftsman for the
General Land Office. In 1840 he became secretary to President Mirabeau B.
Lamar, but resigned because of illness. He died in Galveston in 1846.
The painting shows the first capitol in Austin, Bullock's Tavern, the
Walsh Blacksmith shop, George Hancock's Store, the Metz's Store and log
building, and Dutch John's Bakery. All of the buildings are facing Congress
Avenue.
