The Texas Sesquicentennial
The 66th Legislature passed a bill creating "a commission to coordi-
nate celebrations of the 15oth anniversary of Texas's independence as a
republic and progress as a state." The Texas 1986 Sesquicentennial
Commission is the result. Under the terms of the act the governor will
appoint nine members, the speaker of the house will name three mem-
bers, and the lieutenant governor will designate three members. Nine
ex officio members are specified, including the director of the Texas
State Historical Association.
The duties of the commission are: (1) to encourage individuals, pri-
vate organizations, and local governmental bodies to organize activities
celebrating the state's sesquicentennial; (2) to help individuals, private
organizations, and local governmental bodies that organize sesquicen-
tennial activities to coordinate the activities; (3) to gather and dissemi-
nate to the general public information about sesquicentennial activities
being conducted in the state; (4) to develop standards for sesquicenten-
nial activities organized by individuals, private organizations, and local
governmental bodies, and to sanction activities that comply with the
standards; (5) to invite national and international dignitaries to attend
sesquicentennial activities in the state; (6) to encourage persons living
outside of Texas to attend sesquicentennial activities conducted in the
state; (7) to develop a logo for use by the commission and to permit
other individuals, private groups, or local governmental bodies to use
the logo if the commission considers the use appropriate; and (8) to
sanction products-such as souvenir calendars or flags-which commem-
orate the state's sesquicentennial.
I would like to hear from Association members regarding your opin-
ions about the sesquicentennial. How do you think Texas and Texans
should commemorate the affair? I spelled out some thoughts of my own
in the April Quarterly.
One subject that greatly concerns many Texans is the state of Texas
history studies in the schools. Last March a resolution was passed at the
Association's business meeting calling for a task force to study the state
of Texas history. President Ben H. Procter has asked Dr. Ralph W.
Steen to head the task force and Dr. Steen has agreed to do so. The task
force is added evidence of the Association's concern about the teaching
of history and is a follow-up to Margaret S. Henson's provocative article,54
