Affairs of the Association
L. TUFFLY ELLIS
W ITH THIS ISSUE OF THE Quarterly THE TEXAS STATE HISTORICAL
Association begins the eighty-third volume of the most im-
portant single published source for the study of Texas history. That is
an accomplishment in which all members should take great pride. Along
with the Quarterly the Association has moved ahead on all fronts during
the past year. The endowment and projects funding effort has brought
in or received in commitments more than $12o,ooo. The Junior His-
torian Program and the Walter P. Webb Historical Society have made
noticeable gains in memberships and activities. The Institute of Texas
Studies and Teacher Workshop programs received excellent responses
from teachers, archivists, and graduate students. Three fine books were
published this past year and more are on the way. The annual meeting
attendance was good. The various committees are hard at work carrying
on the "Affairs of the Association."
To the members, staff, and the executive council I express thanks for
your input into the Association's work during the past year. President
F. Lee Lawrence and I were in constant communication on all impor-
tant matters concerning the Association. He was always available (except
for a period of serious illness) and very willing to go to whatever efforts
were required to promote and protect the Association's interests. He
served the organization exceedingly well. His successor, Ben H. Procter,
has already demonstrated the same commitment.
One member of the executive council went off the board this year
after serving a five-year term. He is Fred H. Moore. Fred's services and
assistance to the Association during his tenure on the council staff have
been outstanding. His grasp of what the Association is all about and
his dedication to its needs are deeply appreciated. He has played a vital
role in shaping the destiny of this organization. I take this opportunity
of sharing this information with you and of thanking him publicly.
ANNUAL MEETING
The Association held its eighty-third annual meeting in San Antonio
on March 8-10, under mostly clear skies. Close to 700 people attended
