THE ASSOCIATION'S FISCAL YEAR ENDS ON AUGUST 31. SHORTLY THERE-
after- a certified accountant audits the books and a financial state-
ment is then published in the Quarterly. The financial statement for the
year ending August 31, 1977, is printed below.
The Association has two funds: the General Fund and the Publica-
tions Fund. All receipts from dues, annual meetings, Junior Historian
activities, and miscellaneous income go into the General Fund. Quar-
terly publication costs, Junior Historian activities, annual meeting ex-
penses, some salaries, and miscellaneous expenses are paid from the
General Fund. For some years now this Fund has operated at a deficit.
The Publications Fund supplied the revenues to make up the deficit.
On August 31, 1976, the accumulated deficit totalled $41,654.91.
For the fiscal year ending August 31, 1977, the deficit amounted to
$6,243.13; this figure was not a part of the $41,654.91 accumulated
deficit.
Because of the annual deficits the executive council voted in August,
1977, to raise the Association's yearly dues to $15. Members' dues are
used not only to pay for Quarterly expenses but also to finance other
activities of the Association, efforts that strengthen the whole program
of Texas history in the state. These projects include the Junior His-
torian Program for junior and senior high school students; the Webb
Historical Society, an organization to promote the study of Texas his'-
tory among college and university students; teacher workshops, pro-
grams to upgrade the teaching of Texas history in the schools; the
Institute of Texas Studies, a summer seminar for history teachers, co-
sponsored by the Association and the history department of the Univer-
sity of Texas; and other activities. The income from these programs has
not been sufficient to pay for them; hence the deficits.
Most receipts from the sales of books go into the Publications Fund,
and most expenses incurred with the publication of books are paid from
this Fund. There are some exceptions. Last year, for example, the Texas
Educational Association generously gave the Texas State Historical As-
sociation a grant to aid in the reprinting of Texas History Illustrated,
