added in the Supplement on each of the Standard Metropolitan Statis-
tical Areas. Descriptions of some major cities have been enlarged.
Even with towns with less than i,ooo population, new articles have
been prepared if the town is a county seat, if errors occurred in the
previous work, or if the town reported some noteworthy historical
event.
The titles of all articles in the original Handbook are included in
the alphabet of the Supplement. A title with an asterisk refers the
reader to Volumes I or II. An article with an asterisk in its title supple-
ments something in the earlier volumes; the lack of an asterisk indi-
cates that the subject is new. The symbols "qv" and "qqv" are freely
used to indicate that there are separate articles on the subjects so
marked, but these are used with discretion. The reader's convenience
has been constantly kept in mind.
In this work Branda has had a staff comprising three editorial associ-
ates, nineteen editorial assistants, and twenty staff assistants, who have
researched and written many of the articles. Many others have been
contributed (without payment) by professors, journalists, artists, public
figures, and local historians throughout the state. They have produced
a Supplement that is a worthy companion to the Handbook. No higher
praise is possible.

Most prior studies of the insurrection initiated by Miguel Hidalgo
y Costilla, on September 16, 181o, devote most of their attention to
Hidalgo and to his activities in Central Mexico, to him and his trial
and that of his associates, or to activities initiated in some limited
area to meet his challenge, such as that of Mexico City, or Guadalajara,
or San Antonio de B6xar. To date a careful, thoroughly documented
study of the response of the vast area of the Eastern Interior Provinces
comprising the provinces of Texas, Nuevo Le6n, Coahuila, and
Tamaulipas has been lacking. This work by Isidro Vizcaya Canales
fills this lacuna most adequately.
