Affairs of the Association
L. TUFFLY ELLIS
FINANCES
The Association made no progress during the past year in solving its
financial problem. We continue to be uncertain as to the extent of funding
that the University will provide. Plans to raise funds for an increased
endowment have failed to materialize.
The income from the Association's small endowment will be less this
year than last due to a drop in interest rates and to the fact that some
$30,352 was spent to reprint Volumes I and II of the Handbook. The
endowment will be further reduced when the printing bill for Volume III
of the Handbook comes due. In time, of course, the large expenditures for
reprinting Volumes I and II and publishing Volume III will be recouped,
but in the meantime the pressure on the Association's income increases.
The Association received several gifts this year which have been put into
the endowment fund. The donors and their gifts are: Dr. Rupert N. Rich-
ardson, $500; Mrs. B. Koontz, $I,ooo; J. C. Hutcheson III, $2'oo; James
M. Cotten, $300; Genevieve Hicks Coonly, $200; and Ben E. Pingenot,
$200. We are still far short of a minimum of an additional half million
dollars needed to insure the continuation of the Association's present pro-
grams in their entirety and to provide another staff member to work in
the Junior Historian and Webb Historical Society programs. These last
two aspects of the Association's work are vital to the future life of this
organization because of the interest they awaken among the school children
of Texas to the history of their state and because these two programs have
resulted in considerable upgrading of the teaching of history itself in our
schools.
Members who would like to assist the Association financially may send
contributions to the office and designate them for the endowment fund.
Any amount, small or large, will be helpful. Such contributions are, of
course, tax deductible.
