Book Reviews
volumes for 1972, 1975, and 1976. Hopefully those and all other future
volumes will incorporate some of the suggestions made below. The bro-
chures announce that each of the volumes lists reviews of some 5,000 titles
which appeared in more than ninety better known journals and that they
"concentrate more heavily upon U.S. history." The I973 volume actually
lists closer to 4,000 titles and the 1974 one closer to 4,400. There is an over-
lap of titles of around 23 percent. Thus the two volumes list reviews for
approximately 6,500 different titles.
Each volume contains a list of journals from which reviews have been
indexed. The 1973 list includes 93 journals, 75 percent of which are
oriented toward United States history. The I974 list includes 97 journals,
60 percent of which are oriented toward United States history. Neverthe-
less, only 48 percent of the titles in 1973 and 40 percent of those in 1974
are United States history. The 1974 list has 20 journals not included in
1973 while the latter has 17 not in the former. Of the journals listed for
I974, I was unable to find reviews from 3. On the other hand, I did find
reviews from 7 journals which were not in the list. Of the journals listed
for 1973, I did not find reviews from Io; however, I did find reviews from
19 journals which were not in the list. The numbers of reviews ranged
up to 119 from a given journal. In checking the reviews included in some
journals against the Index, I found that some were missed in every case.
For the Southwestern Historical Quarterly only 27 of 62 reviews in 1973
and only 26 of 63 reviews in 1974 were included. In both cases, two com-
plete issues of the Quarterly were omitted.
Having compiled a few bibliographies and indexes myself, I realize fully
that it is virtually impossible to achieve absolute accuracy and consistency,
but I am positive that the compilers can improve upon the record they
established in the two volumes reviewed here. In a number of cases they
omitted the name of the journal in which a review occurred. They spelled
a few names incorrectly and missed a few transposed letters and strikeovers
in proofreading. Some sets of edited papers of prominent persons are listed
only under the name of the editor while others are listed under both the
editor and the author, although seldom are all volumes listed in both places.
Some multi-volume sets have each volume listed separately even though
all were reviewed by the same person in a single issue of a journal. Other
sets are listed as single entries. In most cases where there is more than one
author or editor, the complete entry is given under only one with cross
references from the other authors to the complete entry. However, oc-
casionally the complete entry is given for both authors with "see also" re-
ferences to the other author. A couple of times I noted a cross reference125
