Southwestern Historical Quarterly
At the regular hour for starting we resumed our march, and, when we
reached the defile, entered it in military order, ready for action. Our
French captain had put me in the vanguard, where I volunteered to lead
the way, & was the first who entered the pass, keeping a keen look out right
& left for gunbarrels behind rocks & boulders, but none appeared. If the
position had been occupied by the enemy, they had taken a hint from our
numbers and appearance that it would be but [wise] to evacuate; for we
found the way open.
I lodged one night on my return with Doctor Edgar in whom I am glad
to say I observed an important change, which I hope may be permanent.
He has resumed, &, as I learned, for some time past, temperate habits,
and appeared, all the time, perfectly sedate & rational, which was far from
being the case when I first saw him. His health, however is so impaired
that I fear nothing can reestablish it.
In due time we reached Matamoros without any other accident than
the the [sic] loss of a few of our animals. Trowbridge was in town at my
arrival, and I found him & the rest of my friends well. Thus endeth the
book of my pilgrimage. As for the rest of my acts, such as the amounts I
sold & the expenses I incurred, and peradventure one or two bad bargains
that I made, and other matters appertaining to lucre, are they not written
in the two books of Chronicles commonly called the day book & ledger.
My smaller deeds such as squables with the Custom House, etcetera, like
those of Judas Macabeus, are too many to be written.
Your affectionate brother
