Southwestern Historical Quarterly

The author divides his southern revolutionary experience into two
revolutions: the external revolution (secession) and the internal
Confederate revolution. Of course, secession failed, and although it
was not the purpose of the author to follow up what happened to
the Confederate revolution, he indicated that it too failed, as war
and Reconstruction destroyed much of the antebellum way of life,
except the myth.

A Classified Bibliography of the Periodical Literature of the Trans-
Mississippi West: A Supplement (1957-67). By Oscar Osburn

The present volume is the third in a series begun by the late Oscar
O. Winther in 1942. The first bibliographical guide listed periodical
literature on the trans-Mississippi West from 1811 to 1938. The
second, published in 1961, incorporated all the entries of the earlier
volume and brought the coverage through 1957. It contained 9,244
entries, compared with 4,559 in the 1970 one. Given the same general
criteria for inclusion, the fact that the supplement for 1957-1967 con-
tains almost half as many entries as the book spanning 146 years at-
tests to the industry of contemporary western historians, as well as
the rapid growth of the profession.
This bibliography follows the same format as the 1961 edition.
Entries are arranged under major alphabetical headings, including
those for states in the region. Other headings are Agriculture,
Buffalo, Canada, Civil War, Frontier, Fur Trade, Great Plains, His-
panic America, Immigrant Groups, Indians, Labor, Lewis and
Clark, Mexico, Military, Missionary Frontier, Mississippi River,
Mormons, National Parks, Negro in the West, Oregon Trail, Outlaws
and Sheriffs, Pacific Islands, Pacific Northwest, Petroleum, Public
Lands and Land Policy, Range and Cattle, Reclamation and Con-
servation, Santa Fe Trail and Trade, Southwest, Transportation and
Communication, West, and Westward Movement. Most major sections
have several subsections, making the detailed table of contents a handy
reference. The index contains only authors' names and their entry
numbers in the bibliography.
Nineteen pages list 281 articles dealing with various aspects of
