I had planned, on my return journey, to touch at Tuskegee in
Alabama and visit the remarkable institute for vocational training
of Booker T. Washington. I had previously written to him about
this intended visit and he had replied that I would be most welcome.
I told Mr. Knapp, the state land agent who had accompanied us, of
my plan to visit Booker Washington's institution. He said to me:
"What do you want to go to the Negro's place for? Let me rather give
you an introduction to the State Agricultural College at Ames in
Iowa, the best of its kind in the United States. My son, Dr. Knapp,
is a professor there. You can stay with him and he will give you
sympathetic assistance."
I took the advice of this old friend. I am glad to have visited Ames;
but I regret not having visited Booker Washington's institution.
There is a sharp color bar in the Southern States, much more so
than in our country; nevertheless the colored man is in some ways
better off than here.
