its development, and all illustrations are grouped between pages
48 and 49 without apparent reason. Errors in spelling appear
in numerous places: "Forunate" (p. v), "Oick" Hare (p. vi),
"Picton" (p. 3), Eli "Hargrove" (p. 9o). Miss St. Clair's nar-
rative style is often interrupted by anecdotes, statistics, short
paragraphs, and jerky organization.
Apparently there is still a need for a complete history of
Hopkins County which would include materials related to the
other three quarters of the County. There are numerous towns
and families that no doubt have their own clan histories, their
early settlers, their proud sons and daughters. There is an un-
published thesis on Hopkins County, by G. G. Orren, dated
1938, in the thesis collection of East Texas State University.
There is also a Heritage from the Past: Sketches from Hopkins
County History, by Celia M. Wright, published in 1959, which
adds much to the history of Hopkins County.
In her use of sources Miss St. Clair has placed emphasis on
scrapbooks and newspaper articles, especially those of Eli Har-
grave and J. C. McDonald. She has also searched document col-
lections and collected letters from early settlers and others. As
a collector of research materials she has contributed much to our
knowledge of Hopkins County. She is to be congratulated on
pursuing a worthwhile study and a satisfying hobby. She has
increased our interest in local history and deserves praise for
working long and hard toward her goal. Her contribution has
been substantial.

Within the deliberately limited scope acknowledged by the
author, the Treasury of Frontier Relics, characterized unpre-
tentiously as a collector's guide to frontier miscellany, is cer-
tainly as much as it purports to be: "a showcase in one corner of
the American panorama devoted to the gear, articles, accessories,
objects, tools, and paraphernalia that are part and parcel of
